Every August brings the excitement of a new soccer season.
New players.
New goals.
New possibilities.
This fall, I have the privilege of returning to the sidelines as a member of the coaching staff for the Wiseburn Da Vinci High School girls’ soccer team.
As I stepped onto our field for another season, I found myself appreciating something that many people might overlook.
The field itself.
When this field was installed, it represented an investment in the future of our students and our community.
Today, years later, it still looks remarkably similar to the day it was opened.
It remains beautiful.
Safe.
Reliable.
Ready for play.
Every single day.
As coaches, we often focus on player development, tactics, and team culture.
But the environment matters, too.
Young athletes deserve facilities that allow them to train consistently, compete safely, and focus on becoming the best versions of themselves.
One of the things I appreciate most about this field is that it is constantly in use.
Our girls’ soccer team trains here.
Flag football teams compete here.
Students use it throughout the school day.
Physical education classes take advantage of it.
Community members gather here after school and on weekends.
It is not a field that sits empty.
It is a field that gives back to the community every single day.
Just as importantly, it has remained in outstanding condition despite that constant use.
It doesn’t require irrigation during California’s increasingly dry seasons.
It doesn’t need to recover after heavy use.
It continues to provide a consistent playing experience for thousands of students and community members year after year.
From my own experience coaching, I’ve also appreciated the consistency it provides for our athletes. Compared with my first season coaching on an older playing surface, I have seen fewer disruptions related to field conditions and have been encouraged by the quality and reliability of the environment our student-athletes experience every day.
At Playing for Keeps, we often talk about creating sustainable sports infrastructure.
This is what that looks like.
Infrastructure isn’t successful because it’s new.
It’s successful because it continues serving children long after the ribbon-cutting ceremony is over.
The best community investments don’t simply solve today’s problems.
They continue creating opportunities for years—and often decades—to come.
As conversations continue around the future of youth sports facilities, I believe we should evaluate every investment by asking a simple question:
How many lives will this improve over the lifetime of the project?
Because a field is never just a field.
It is where teammates become friends.
Where confidence is built.
Where healthy habits are formed.
Where young people learn resilience after a difficult loss and humility after a meaningful victory.
It is where families gather.
Where communities connect.
Where children discover what they are capable of becoming.
That is why sustainable infrastructure matters.
Not because it supports one team.
But because it supports an entire community.
When we build thoughtfully, maintain wisely, and invest for the long term, everyone benefits.
Students.
Schools.
Families.
Neighborhoods.
Future generations.
That is the kind of investment Playing for Keeps believes every community deserves.
Because every child deserves more than a moment.
Every child deserves a place to play.
